The University of Pennsylvania baseball team experienced mixed results on Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Delaware. The Quakers lost the continuation of Friday's home opener to Delaware with a score of 12-7 but managed to secure their first win of the season by defeating Delaware 2-1 in the regularly scheduled game.
The victory snapped Penn's seven-game losing streak, bringing their record to 1-7, while Delaware fell to 6-8.
In the first game, Delaware quickly established a lead against Penn starter Noah Millikan, scoring twice early. Penn responded with Gavin Collins' double and Nick Spaventa's two-run homer, taking a brief lead. However, Delaware regained control with three runs in the fifth inning and extended their advantage further before the game was suspended due to darkness.
When play resumed on Saturday afternoon, Delaware solidified their lead with a two-run homer. Despite Qwynn Ahearn's solo home run for Penn, Delaware secured a 12-7 victory.
In the second game, both teams struggled offensively in what turned into a pitcher's duel. Spaventa gave Penn an early lead with an RBI single. Freshman pitcher Sebastian Haggard impressed in his first start by striking out several batters but allowed one run on a wild pitch that tied the game. Ernie Echevarria's double drove in the winning run for Penn.
Penn's bullpen held firm for the remainder of the contest, with Marty Coyne earning the win and Thomas Shurtleff securing his first save as they clinched a 2-1 victory.
The series will conclude on Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium at 2 p.m., with live streaming available on FloSports.
