Antoinett McNear, a Community Health Worker and Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Coach at Temple University Hospital, is preparing to donate a kidney to her father, Acia Gay. McNear describes her father as her world, while Gay has been hesitant about accepting the donation due to concerns about his daughter's well-being.
Gay expressed initial reluctance because of the commitment involved. "I knew she would have to take time off work," he said. However, as they progressed through the kidney donation process, Gay's concerns eased after witnessing the support McNear received from Temple's medical staff. "I've watched doctors, nurses, everyone support what she's doing," he noted.
The supportive environment extended beyond medical professionals. "From the cafeteria workers to registration to the labs, everyone has been very supportive of both of us," Gay mentioned.
This is not Gay's first experience with Temple University Hospital. He previously survived a massive heart attack in 2000 thanks to their care and has family members who have had successful kidney transplants there. In November 2023, when diagnosed with kidney damage requiring dialysis and a transplant, McNear offered her kidney without hesitation.
The donation process revealed additional heart issues for Gay, necessitating stent placement and delaying the transplant by six months. Now cleared for surgery scheduled for early March, Gay envisions sharing a recovery room with his daughter post-surgery.
Reflecting on his daughter's decision, Gay shared his gratitude: "I cry almost every day... It's a big deal and a big sacrifice. And it's a huge blessing."
