Philadelphia Union's 2025 season has started on a high note, with the team securing two victories. This success has been particularly significant for Olwethu Makhanya, a 20-year-old centerback from South Africa, who made his debut and started in both Major League Soccer (MLS) matches.

Makhanya is one of six players who played every minute in the games against Orlando City and FC Cincinnati. His contribution to the team's defense was crucial, as they conceded only three goals while scoring four times in each match.

Reflecting on his journey from signing to becoming a starter, Makhanya expressed gratitude for the opportunity. "It's an opportunity that I've been working really hard for and praying for. So now that it's happening, I feel really blessed, and I’m trying to make sure that I use it," he said.

Joining Philadelphia Union in mid-2023 was challenging for Makhanya due to the long distance from South Africa. However, by 2024 he adapted well, playing with Union II and gaining valuable experience through their playoff run.

“Obviously, getting that game time for the second team helped me to understand the team a little bit more," Makhanya explained. "All of the younger guys that are playing in the first team had to play in the second team."

The offseason saw changes within the Union's defense as Jack Elliott transferred to Chicago Fire and Damion Lowe also departed. These changes opened up opportunities for players like Makhanya. He was determined during preseason training in Spain to show his readiness.

“I was really excited. During preseason, something was telling me that I might get a chance," he noted about his mindset before earning his spot.

Head Coach Bradley Carnell eventually selected Makhanya for the starting lineup against Orlando City—a moment he had eagerly anticipated since joining the club.

Makhanya described playing at home as an unforgettable experience: "Oh...the home opener. Wow, that game was fun...I mean it was really fun."

Looking ahead, Makhanya remains focused on maintaining consistency and contributing positively to ensure continued success for Philadelphia Union this season.

“There’s a lot of things I'm excited about," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to helping maintain early dominance on-field performances."
