The Philadelphia Union's School Squad has been actively engaging with local schools during the 2024/2025 academic year. Led by Lisa Cotter, the program director, and her team of coaches, the initiative brings soccer excitement to students through assemblies. These events have been well-received by both students and teachers.
A key highlight of these assemblies is the participation of Phang, the Union's mascot. Known for its transformation from a snake into a soccer-loving character with limbs and a mohawk, Phang's lively presence adds enjoyment to the sessions. The mascot interacts with students through activities like high-fives and playful soccer drills.
The School Squad aims to promote physical activity and foster an interest in soccer while strengthening ties between the Philadelphia Union and the community. By introducing soccer directly to schools, they hope to cultivate future fans and players, supporting the sport's continued growth.
As 2025 unfolds, the School Squad exemplifies the Philadelphia Union's dedication to community involvement and youth development. Each school visit not only spreads enthusiasm for soccer but also encourages young people to remain active and pursue their dreams.
