Rob Thomson made a strategic change to the Phillies lineup on Friday at Busch Stadium, placing Bryce Harper to hit third and Kyle Schwarber fourth. This marked the first time Harper and Schwarber, both left-handed hitters, batted consecutively for the Phillies. Despite the new setup, the team faced a 2-0 loss to the Cardinals.

"Just trying to protect Harper as best we can," said Thomson, expressing a familiar managerial preference for a balanced lineup. Harper, with an impressive record against lefties, teamed with Schwarber, who has similarly shown strength against left-handed pitchers.

In Friday's game, Harper was walked, and Schwarber followed with a single. Their double steal to advance runners was halted when Nick Castellanos' ball was caught by Cardinals right fielder Jordan Walker.

Harper's recent intentional walks—63 since joining the Phillies—prompted the lineup revision. Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola acknowledged the challenge opponents face against Harper and Schwarber. "They've always got a good chance to hit a home run or get a hit," Nola noted.

Friday's lineup adjustment aimed to address Harper facing fewer pitch strikes, particularly with runners in scoring positions. Thomson's decision followed Harper's recent games, including a double intentional walk against the Atlanta Braves.

Opinions on Harper’s and Schwarber’s consecutive spots remain positive within the team. Schwarber, frequently asked about his lineup position since joining the Phillies in 2022, voiced readiness to contribute in any role required. "There’s no new weight on myself," Schwarber asserted, emphasizing the team's cohesive dynamic and trust among teammates.
