Alec Bohm, the Philadelphia Phillies’ All-Star third baseman, is facing a challenging start to the season. Despite a strong performance in previous years, Bohm currently finds himself struggling with his batting average and RBIs while enduring some bad luck. In the past 17 days, he has batted .151 with no home runs, three RBIs, and a .336 OPS.
Bohm has expressed frustration over the intense scrutiny he faces. "I feel like everything is very, very overanalyzed that I do on the baseball field,” he said before a recent win over the Cardinals. Despite his challenges, he maintains a high average exit velocity and hard-hit rate, which is not reflected in his current statistics.
In comparison, Bohm recalls incidents like hitting a line drive that was caught by an opposing player despite its speed. "It’s like, alright. I guess we’re doing this,” he remarked after one such play. He acknowledges the current disparity between his effort and results: "Everywhere I turn, it’s, oh, look at your expected numbers, look at this, keep your head up, it’s going to be OK."
Discussing his unchanging approach to the game, Bohm declared, "I hit the ball hard, do my job, do what I can, show up, work hard, prepare, go up there and take my at-bats." He remains optimistic that eventually, "When we look up at the end of the year, I’m going to be right around .280. I’m going to be right around 100 RBIs."
Bohm is aware of the observations on his performance and the pressures coming from both within the team and external opinions. He displays resilience and determination: "The longer you play in the big leagues and the more experience you get... the more you’re confident in what you’ve done here."
As the season progresses, Bohm hopes for a reversal of fortune and remains committed to maintaining his usual performance standards.
