The Philadelphia Flyers have put forward forward Garnet Hathaway for consideration for the 2024-25 King Clancy Memorial Trophy. This trophy is given annually to a player who demonstrates strong leadership on and off the ice and has made significant humanitarian contributions to his community.
Dan Hilferty, CEO and Chairman of Comcast Spectacor and Flyers Governor, praised Hathaway, stating, "Since Garnet’s arrival to Philadelphia, his impact on our team, our fans, and across the community has been infectious." He also highlighted the contributions made by Hathaway and his wife Lindsay to the local community, especially to first responders.
Hathaway expressed his gratitude for the nomination, saying, "It’s an incredible honor to be recognized for this award, but the real reward comes from the connections Lindsay and I have made with first responders and their families."
Hathaway, who recently concluded his 10th NHL season and second with the Flyers, has dedicated himself to supporting first responders and their families through his initiative, Hath’s Heroes. This program focuses on providing financial assistance and enhancing overall well-being. The effort was inspired by Hathaway’s great-grandfather, who served as a firefighter.
His initiative has included activities like hosting first responders and their families at games and organizing post-game meetings. Hath’s Heroes' recent fundraising campaign, Hits for Hath’s Heroes, has successfully generated funds for first responder organizations. "We are grateful for Garnet Hathaway's efforts on the ice representing our beloved Philadelphia Flyers, but, more importantly, his impact off the ice in our community,” said Jack Costello from the Families Behind the Badge Children’s Foundation.
Hathaway also works on expanding youth access to hockey by supporting local initiatives such as rebuilding a ball hockey rink.
On the professional front, Hathaway reached a career milestone by playing his 600th NHL game this season. He achieved his highest point total in three seasons and earned a place among the league's most physical players.
Nominees for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy are selected by NHL teams, with the winner chosen by a committee led by senior NHL executives. The selected player will receive a $25,000 donation for charity and an opportunity for their club to receive a grant should he wish to activate a related humanitarian cause.
Introduced in 1988, the King Clancy Memorial Trophy honors Frank “King” Clancy, a notable figure in hockey for his diverse contributions to the game.
