Eight months after joining the Philadelphia Union from FC Metz in French Ligue 2, 24-year-old midfielder Danley Jean-Jacques is adapting to both life and soccer in a new country. Jean-Jacques, who hails from Petit-Goâve, Haiti, has established himself as a regular in the Union's lineup under the guidance of Head Coach Bradley Carnell, starting in six of the team's seven matches so far in 2025.
Jean-Jacques explained that his transition to Major League Soccer was challenging due to the language barrier and the need to leave his familiar environment. However, he recounts positive experiences both on and off the field. “My first few months in Philadelphia were both fantastic and challenging. I discovered a new culture and met incredible people who quickly helped me integrate. But the move, the language barrier, and the adjustment process weren't easy at first. Despite that, I fell in love with the city,” said Jean-Jacques.
The move has also aided in his development as a player. “Since joining the Union, I've really been able to progress as a player. The coach, the staff, and my teammates have helped me a lot, whether tactically, technically, or mentally,” he stated.
Jean-Jacques' commitment extends beyond his on-field responsibilities. He shared insights into his personal growth since arriving in Philadelphia, stating, “Changing countries and discovering a new culture forces you to step out of your comfort zone. I've had to take on more responsibilities and grow as a person. I'm calm, respectful, a good listener, and quite reserved. As a teammate, I'm always there for the team, to defend the club's colors and represent our fans.”
Despite missing one match due to international duties with Haiti during a FIFA break, Jean-Jacques views his steady inclusion in the starting lineup as a significant achievement. “It's a real source of pride to have earned my starting spot on this team. I thank the coach for the trust he has placed in me, and my teammates who push me to give my best. Being a starter doesn't come by chance: it's the result of hard work, consistency, and solidarity between us,” he commented.
Reflecting on his memorable moments since joining the Union, Jean-Jacques highlighted his first match of the season against Orlando as a standout experience. He also emphasized that the entire team's support, rather than any single individual, was instrumental in his transition to MLS. “When I arrived, it wasn't just one person who helped me, but the entire staff and the entire team. I felt supported from the start, and that really helped me in my transition to MLS,” he noted.
Looking to the future, Jean-Jacques is excited about contributing to the team's success and is motivated by the fans' enthusiasm. “What excites me most this season is being able to play, improve, and, above all, bring joy to the fans. Their energy and passion push us to give our all,” he stated.
For his personal goals in 2025, Jean-Jacques aims to continue improving while setting his sights on scoring his first goal with the Union. “My personal goal for 2025 is to continue to improve, help the team as much as possible, and go as far as possible with the club. I also have one goal in mind: to score my very first goal with the Union,” he concluded.
