The University of Pennsylvania baseball team continued its success with a dominant 16-1 win against Cornell at Booth Field on Monday. With this victory, the Quakers have extended their win streak to eight games, marking a significant improvement to their 16-12 overall record and a 10-2 standing in Ivy League play. Penn now leads the league, two games ahead of both Yale and Columbia, while Cornell's losses amounted to four straight, leaving them with a 10-13 record.
Coach John Yurkow's team demonstrated consistency, winning 15 out of their last 18 games since March 14. "Penn scored its most runs in Ivy play this season with a 16-run outburst on Monday," illustrating their offensive power. Gavin Collins was particularly impressive over the weekend series, "batting .667 (6-for-9) with five runs scored, six RBIs, a homer, a double, four walks, and two hit-by-pitches."
The Quakers' starting pitcher, Will Tobin, allowed only one run over six innings. "Senior lefty Will Tobin (2-1) dazzled in his start," recording six strikeouts. "Connor Darling and Thomas Shurtleff picked up where they left off from last weekend with three shutout innings of relief."
Penn's offensive prowess was on display throughout the game. Ernie Echevarria hit the first home run of his career, while Nick Spaventa and Echevarria drove in a combined nine runs. The Quakers' aggressive batting strategy paid off, highlighted by "five doubles tied a season-high against Ivy opponents."
The win propels Penn as they approach their fourth Ivy League series against Yale. The series is slated to start with a doubleheader in Philadelphia during Easter weekend.
