Philadelphia -- Bryce Harper took a unique approach to announce the gender of his fourth child at Monday night's game against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park. Harper walked to the plate holding a special blue bat, revealing that he and his wife Kayla will be having a boy.
Phillies shortstop Trea Turner played a role in the gender reveal. "Pretty cool, pretty special day," Turner commented. Before the game, Harper had asked Turner to present him with either a blue or pink bat during his first at-bat.
"I was confused at first, but I think he wanted to share that moment with us," Turner explained. "He let us know in our team meeting. He kind of wanted to share the moment with everybody. He was nice enough to ask me to do it. I thought it was a nice moment for him and his family." Harper's bats, sourced from Victus Sports in King of Prussia, included one pink and one blue. Turner received a text revealing the gender before the game, and turned it into a playful moment by swinging a pink bat in the dugout initially. "He thought he was having a girl, so I had to mess with him a little bit. Sure enough, it was a boy. I ended up handing him the blue one, and he was pretty happy," Turner said.
The Harpers currently have a son, Krew, and two daughters, Brooklyn and Kamryn. "Like I said, he thought he was having a girl," Turner added. "So, I handed him the blue one. I said, 'You're not going to need that pink one.' He was just excited. I think he would have been excited either way, but now, he's got two of each." Turner remarked that the news adds to an already complete family for Harper.
