Ronda Burns, an 8-year-old leukemia patient, and her family have received a newly renovated home in North Philadelphia. The renovation was made possible through Building Hope for Kids, a collaboration that includes Flyers Charities, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, and Michael's Way.
The makeover project began in January and was completed by early March. The renovation included two bedrooms, a playroom for Ronda, a living room, kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, and a backyard with a covered dining area.
Joyce Burns expressed gratitude: "We're incredibly grateful to Michael's Way, St. Christopher's and Flyers Charities for their hard work to make our dream house a reality." She acknowledged the impact of cancer on many Americans and highlighted the comfort their new home provides during challenging times.
Chris McElwee from Michael's Way managed the construction process. He stated: "We did the construction in six weeks, and then the decorating is two weeks." He emphasized that the home is now a safe environment after addressing issues like mold.
Significant contributions came from the wives of Philadelphia Flyers players who played key roles in designing Ronda's bedroom and playroom. Alex Sanheim shared: "Her wishes for her room was purple," detailing how they incorporated this into the design.
Flyers alternate governor Blair Listino noted the family's excitement upon seeing their revamped home: "They were screaming... It was so exciting."
Lindsay Hathaway spoke about the significance of their involvement: "I think anytime we have an opportunity to get involved in something like this and give back, it's such an honor."
Despite some remaining work like installing a chairlift, Misha Briere reflected on the project's impact: "It's not a hardship story... everybody's goal and intention for them is just to give them an easier trip and a better life going forward."
