Philadelphia Union II is set to begin its 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season with a match against New England at Gillette Stadium. Ahead of the game, new head coach Ryan Richter shared insights about his first months in the role and expectations for the upcoming season.

Richter expressed enthusiasm about his new position, noting, "It's been really exciting. As we approach our first game, we've had a two-month build-up." He praised both players and staff for their commitment during this period.

Discussing his inheritance of a successful team from last season, Richter commented on the positive environment he joined: "Honestly, that was an awesome way to enter... they saw the positives of when the group is working selflessly."

Preseason preparations included rigorous training sessions in Philadelphia and Clearwater, Florida. The team engaged in competitive matches to develop their style and intensity. Richter emphasized building a strong culture throughout these phases.

Reflecting on surprises since joining Union II, Richter noted how quickly everyone committed to the project: "I was surprised at how bought in everyone was almost immediately."

When asked about areas for growth this season, Richter focused on young players adapting to professional soccer's demands: "Our group... have to learn how to become pros... it's far more physical, far more aggressive."

Richter highlighted examples of past Union II players advancing to first-team contracts as motivation for current members. He stated that seeing peers succeed offers inspiration: "You have examples all around you."

Emphasizing opportunity within Union II's philosophy, Richter confirmed its continuation in 2025 but stressed merit-based advancement: "If you deserve a debut, for sure you will get it, but you have to earn that first."

Richter described what makes this year's team special: "Like last year, it's the age of the players... they're chasing this dream that they have." He looks forward to witnessing their development over time.

Overall goals remain straightforward according to Richter: "Every time you step on the field you're trying to win," instilling teamwork alongside individual growth as part of achieving success together.
