Five prospects from the Philadelphia Flyers have been chosen to participate in the 2024-25 World Junior Championship (WJC). This year’s event is set to take place in Ottawa from December 26 to January 5. Among the selected players, three will represent Canada, while Sweden and Finland each have one representative.
Oliver Bonk, a first-round pick by the Flyers in 2023, returns for Team Canada. The London Knights defenseman scored six goals and provided 15 assists this season. He was born and raised in Ottawa, following his father Radek Bonk's career with the Senators. Oliver previously played in last year's WJC and at the U18 level during the Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournament.
Jett Luchanko, another first-round selection by the Flyers in 2024, secured his spot on Team Canada’s roster after showing impressive skills over recent months. He appeared briefly with the Flyers before returning to play for Guelph Storm in the OHL.
Carson Bjarnason, a goaltender for Brandon Wheat Kings and a second-round pick by Philadelphia in 2023, joins Team Canada as well. Known for his strong performances at various showcases and camps, he has developed physically since last year.
Jack Berglund will represent Sweden after gaining experience in professional leagues such as SHL and Allsvenskan. The young center might take on more responsibilities next year but currently plays a supporting role.
For Finland, Heikki Ruohonen makes it onto their provisional roster. Playing with Dubuque Fighting Saints this season, Ruohonen plans to join Harvard University next year.
The tournament features defending champions Team USA competing alongside Canada and Finland in Group A during preliminary rounds. On December 26th, Canada faces Finland at Canadian Tire Centre. Meanwhile, Sweden competes against Slovakia within Group B that includes Czechia among others.
