In a recent initiative, Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, engaged with patients at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) through his foundation. During the NFL's My Cause My Cleats event in Week 13 against Baltimore, Hurts represented his Jalen Hurts Foundation.
The foundation aims to support and mentor youth by providing them with opportunities. "Our mission is to serve, progress, and mentor our youth. We want to give them more opportunities and amplify their platforms," said Hurts. He emphasized the importance of pushing individuals toward realizing their potential.
For the game against the Carolina Panthers, Hurts wore custom cleats designed with input from three CHOP patients: John, Nicholas, and Vaughn. The design process involved a visit to CHOP on November 26. "It was a fun process," noted Hurts about creating the cleats featuring elements like a gold ribbon for childhood cancer awareness and colors reflecting the children's preferences.
The cleats displayed "NVJ" on one side, representing the children's initials, while CHOP's logo adorned the other side. John shared his experience: "There were pieces of paper on the table and we designed the cleats however we wanted."
Hurts expressed gratitude for meeting the children and emphasized enjoying moments with them during activities like bingo at Lincoln Financial Field. Unbeknownst to them initially, each child received their own pair of sneakers mirroring their design.
"It'll be fun; it's a moment that they deserve," remarked Hurts before revealing the surprise to John, Vaughn, and Nicholas. The encounter included signed jerseys and photos with families.
Reflecting on these interactions, Hurts said: "Quarterbacking comes with a lot... being able to leave my fingerprint and imprint on anyone who needs it – that's what it's all about."
