Philadelphia Union is set to play its only away game of April this Saturday, facing Eastern Conference opponents New York City FC at Citi Field. The match can be viewed through the MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
In the lead-up to this game, Philadelphia Union experienced key changes. Earlier this week, the club announced the injury of Ian Glavinovich and the transfer of Daniel Gazdag. Head Coach Bradley Carnell, however, remains focused on Saturday's match.
Philadelphia Union's team will travel to New York City on Friday for their first matchup of the season against NYCFC. Currently holding third place in the Eastern Conference standings with only one point from their last two games, the Union aims to regain their strong early-season performance against NYCFC, which is in 11th place.
This game will pit two newly appointed Head Coaches against each other, with Bradley Carnell having joined the Union shortly before NYCFC appointed Pascal Jansen.
Reflecting on the teams' past encounters, Carnell said, “Both of us are very forward passing teams in transition. I think we're number one. They're number two in terms of the transitional phase. So when linking up through Morales and Parks and what have you, those guys can be very dangerous playing forward passes and getting runners in behind.”
He continued, “We know what type of game that puts you in, and we feel pretty comfortable in those types of games. We just have to get on the front foot and be the initiator of that sort of energy.”
The Union will face NYCFC without Ian Glavinovich, who underwent successful meniscus surgery this week. Kai Wagner's participation remains uncertain due to an oblique injury. The team may rely on younger players such as Neil Pierre to fill in for missing players. Carnell spoke about Pierre's development, noting, “He's still learning the tricks of the trade. We've put him into the deep end, and he's learning to swim.”
Carnell expressed confidence in the team's defensive coverage and highlighted the option of repositioning versatile players if needed.
