Flyers center Ryan Poehling has taken on a more prominent role since Morgan Frost and Scott Laughton were traded to other teams. Since joining the Flyers in 2023, Poehling has been known for his defensive capabilities. Recently, he has been centering a line with Owen Tippett and Jakob Pelletier, contributing to the team’s offensive efforts.
Over the past ten games, Poehling, a Minnesota native, has scored seven goals and totaled ten points. His goal tally rose from four to eleven, and his points increased from fifteen to twenty-five within eighteen days.
"He's a streak scorer," Flyers interim head coach Brad Shaw commented. Poehling scored his fifth goal in six games during a recent victory over the Nashville Predators. Shaw noted, "Poehls has shown this before at times. He has good speed and size, and he's playing with two other forwards who are very good skaters. I think that can benefit all three in playing with pace."
Poehling's contributions were also vital in a win against Toronto, where his forechecking led to a goal. Despite his recent offensive success, Poehling remains focused on defense, continuing to kill penalties and block shots.
"That's the mentality it takes not only to be a Flyer but to stay in the league," Poehling stated. Reflecting on his increased playing time, he said, "I'm playing a lot more. I've been playing well. I think success kind of lags in this league... Right now, I'm getting the bounces and making the most of it."
Poehling, originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, has had scoring streaks before, but this is his best yet.
Mark "Trees" LaForest, former backup goalie for the Flyers, recently passed away. He was 62. LaForest, known for his cheerful spirit, also played for other NHL teams and was recognized in the AHL for his goaltending. Post-career, he was active in Alumni Games and supported military personnel, including visiting troops in Afghanistan. In later life, he cherished being a grandfather.
Interim head coach Brad Shaw has also had connections in the hockey world. As a former Ottawa Senators player, he maintains a friendship with Brad Marsh, now involved with the Flyers Charities. Shaw, who has transitioned from player to coach, had the support of Flyers Hall of Fame member Dave Schultz during his time with the Detroit Vipers in the International Hockey League.
Schultz remembers Shaw as "a very smart hockey player. Very well-prepared."
