Before the Philadelphia Eagles headed to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, Executive Vice President and General Manager Howie Roseman discussed linebacker Zack Baun's journey to becoming an Eagle. The team had been eyeing Baun since the start of free agency in March 2024.
"He was a targeted player," Roseman stated, indicating that Baun was among the first players contacted by the Eagles. The team believed his skills from four seasons with the Saints would fit well into Vic Fangio's defense, potentially in a new role. After signing a one-year contract with Philadelphia, Baun focused on contributing to the team's success.
Baun excelled during the Eagles' Super Bowl-winning season, transitioning to an off-ball linebacker position and earning first-team All-Pro honors. He also became a Pro Bowl selection and was a finalist for The Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
As 2025 NFL Free Agency approaches, the Eagles announced that Baun agreed to terms on a three-year deal through 2027. "I've loved this season and enjoyed the year more than anything on and off the field," Baun said during Super Bowl week. "I'm here to do whatever I can to help the team win football games."
In Super Bowl LIX, Baun delivered an outstanding performance with seven unassisted tackles and a crucial interception against Patrick Mahomes, helping secure a 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Baun's successful season highlighted both his talent and the Eagles' scouting department's ability to identify key players. Linebackers Coach Bobby King praised Baun's versatility: "He's like a Swiss Army knife with about 12 different tools and blades on it."
The work continues for both Baun, originally drafted by New Orleans in 2020, and for Philadelphia as they recently extended All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley's contract through 2028. As teams prepare for negotiations with unrestricted free agents next week, retaining Baun was crucial for maintaining their championship-winning roster.
