Zack Wheeler shared a light-hearted moment with Phillies first baseman Kyle Schwarber during a recent game. "I just told him I wasn’t getting over there today," Wheeler said about covering first base. "So, he had it all." Schwarber responded, "He didn’t need anything. He looked unreal."
This exchange took place before the Phillies’ 7-7 tie with the Yankees in a Grapefruit League game at BayCare Ballpark. Schwarber is practicing his skills at first base as part of the team's strategy to keep veterans healthy throughout the season.
Schwarber expressed optimism about his new role: "It’s only good. Right? It’s good for me. I can do something else throughout camp." He added that this could provide relief for Bryce Harper and maintain left-handed bats in the lineup against right-handed pitchers.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson introduced the idea to Schwarber before Spring Training began, suggesting he continue working in left field while also trying out first base. Schwarber agreed and reached out to Phil Sheridan, Phillies director of clubhouse services, to order a first baseman's mitt.
Historically, Schwarber has played more innings as a catcher than at first base but is embracing this challenge during Spring Training. He noted that errors are less significant now compared to crucial postseason games.
Schwarber played five innings at first base on Thursday without any ground balls coming his way but will have more opportunities this spring. Thomson plans to play him at first base a few more times.
Schwarber's contract is nearing its end, and adding versatility might benefit both him and the team in future considerations. He stated, "If things work out here, that would be awesome...there’s still a part of me that always wants to be in the field."
Throughout Spring Training, Schwarber will continue refining his skills under the guidance of infield coach Bobby Dickerson. Commenting on Dickerson's approach, Schwarber mentioned, "He hates the word ‘fielding.’ He likes the word ‘catch.’"
When asked about Schwarber's performance at first base, Wheeler simply said it was "Solid" with "Nice throws across the infield."
