The University of Pennsylvania baseball team faced another narrow defeat against Rutgers, losing 3-2 in 11 innings at Tommy Lasorda Field. This marks the second consecutive extra-inning game for the Quakers, who now have a record of 1-9. Meanwhile, Rutgers improved their standing to 7-9.

Penn has experienced back-to-back home losses at the start of a full season for the first time since March 23, 2002. The team last played consecutive extra-inning games in 2018 against Dartmouth and Villanova.

Davis Baker led Penn's offense with three hits in four at-bats, along with a walk and a stolen base. Jarrett Pokrovsky and Nick Spaventa each contributed an RBI. Thomas Shurtleff took his second loss of the season after allowing one run on two hits. Josh Katz, Andrew Miehe, and Tommy Delany each pitched scoreless innings.

Defensively, Penn recorded three errors for the second time this season and has committed at least one error in nine out of ten games.

In the game, both starting pitchers kept runs off the board initially. JT Thompson put Rutgers ahead with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Penn responded in the sixth inning with runs from Pokrovsky's single and Spaventa's sacrifice fly.

Rutgers tied it up with a solo home run in the eighth inning. In extra innings, JD Jones executed a suicide squeeze bunt that scored Thompson for Rutgers' winning run.

Despite Cole McGonigal getting into scoring position for Penn in the bottom of the eleventh inning, Caden Fahy flew out and Connor Chavez grounded out to end the game.
