Cole Hamels, a former Phillies pitcher and World Series MVP, shared his expertise with Andrew Painter, the organization's top prospect. The interaction took place after Painter's bullpen session at Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Florida. Hamels is one of the few who can relate to Painter's position as a high-profile prospect.

During their conversation on the mound, Hamels demonstrated his changeup grip, a pitch that contributed significantly to his successful career. Painter, currently ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 8 prospect in baseball, attentively observed and engaged with questions.

“He had a good changeup,” said Painter. “I wanted to pick his brain about that... It’s been something I’ve been messing around with.” He expressed an interest in experimenting with different grips and approaches while preparing for the season.

Hamels was present at camp as a guest instructor and plans to return next month. He enjoys sharing knowledge from his 15-year career: “It’s just talking pitch philosophy and what you do,” he explained regarding their discussion on developing new pitches.

Painter plans to experiment further with the grip during practice sessions: “Stretch it out, 90 feet, see what the movement is like,” he mentioned.

Hamels left impressed by Painter's determination: “He wants to be good,” he remarked. Highlighting the young player's approach, Hamels noted that Painter focuses on self-improvement rather than succumbing to external pressures or expectations.

As spring training continues, there is anticipation for whether Painter will join the Phillies' rotation this summer.
