Saturday's 4 Nations Face-Off game in Montreal between Team Canada and Team USA echoed the intense rivalry seen during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Team USA emerged victorious with a 3-1 win, securing their place in the tournament championship match scheduled for February 20 in Boston.
The scoring began with Team Canada's Connor McDavid at 5:31 of the first period. However, Team USA's Jake Guentzel equalized at 10:15. The tie persisted until Dylan Larkin scored for Team USA at 13:33 of the second period. The Americans maintained their lead, and Guentzel added an empty-net goal at 18:41 of the third period to seal the victory. Guentzel contributed two goals, while Larkin had one goal and one assist.
Travis Sanheim from the Flyers was included in Team Canada's lineup, replacing injured Shea Theodore. Sanheim played for 15:14 over 23 shifts, recording one shot on goal, one giveaway, and one takeaway. He ended with a minus-one rating after being on ice for Larkin's decisive goal.
During Larkin's goal sequence, Sanheim had just entered the ice when a counterattack by the Americans developed. Attempting to block a pass from Larkin to J.T. Miller, Sanheim slid but could not prevent Larkin from scoring against goalie Jordan Binnington.
Canada will face Finland on Monday in a crucial game that may decide if they can challenge Team USA again for the championship title. Meanwhile, Sweden remains in contention as they prepare to play against the Americans in Monday's final round-robin game.
Flyers winger Travis Konecny did not participate in Saturday's game but played in the tournament opener against Sweden. Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson has yet to appear in any of Sweden's games so far.
