Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto is open to trying new positions as the team explores options to manage his workload during the final year of his five-year, $115.5 million contract. Manager Rob Thomson has discussed creative ways to keep Realmuto healthy and effective, including the possibility of playing left field.

Realmuto's willingness to adapt stems from his desire to win. "I want to win," he said. "At the end of the day, if the Phillies win and we have a good season, the contract stuff is going to take care of itself."

Realmuto underwent surgery on his right knee last June, which limited him to 99 games. He posted a .266 batting average with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs but recorded his lowest OPS since his rookie season in Miami in 2015. The knee issue primarily affected him while running bases.

Despite these challenges, Realmuto remains optimistic about his ability to perform at a high level behind the plate. "I don’t have a specific number I want to catch," he stated. "But where I stand right now, there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to catch that many and kind of do what I’ve been able to do in the past."

Thomson noted that nothing is set in stone regarding Realmuto's potential shift to left field but emphasized flexibility as key for managing workloads effectively. "There’s nothing set in stone," Thomson said. "It’s just an idea."

Realmuto echoed this sentiment with a willingness to try different roles if it benefits the team: "Whatever gives us the best chance to win, I’ll give it a shot."

The Phillies are looking for ways to maintain lineup flexibility while considering Realmuto's health and contract status as they aim for success this season.
