Alec Bohm, the Philadelphia Phillies' third baseman, faced an offseason filled with uncertainty as trade rumors swirled around him. Despite speculation about his future with the team, Bohm remains with the Phillies and is focused on improving his performance for the upcoming season.
During the winter, Bohm worked out in Houston and was frequently asked about potential trades. "So, you, uh, getting traded or what?" was a common question he encountered. While he wasn't sure of his status at the time, Bohm explained that he didn't dwell on it too much. "Whatever was going to happen was going to happen," he said.
Bohm's performance last season included a .280 batting average with 15 home runs and 97 RBIs. His contributions earned him a starting position at third base for the National League All-Star team. However, discussions about trading him were considered due to his value as a run-producing player who would not reach free agency until after the 2026 season.
Despite these discussions, both Phillies manager Rob Thomson and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski reassured Bohm that he was not being shopped around. These conversations helped ease Bohm's mind during an uncertain period.
Looking ahead to this season, Bohm may hit third in the lineup between Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber as Thomson considers lineup adjustments. Last year, Bohm had a strong first half but struggled after the All-Star break due to a left-hand injury that landed him on the injured list.
Reflecting on his challenges last season, including frustrations that led to public displays of emotion like slamming his helmet into the turf, Bohm acknowledged areas for personal growth. He noted similarities to former Phillies player Chase Utley in terms of handling emotions but aims to mature as both a player and teammate.
As spring training begins in Clearwater, Florida, Bohm is focused on building upon last year's positives while learning from past negatives. "I definitely feel like I’ve experienced a lot in my short time here," he said. "It hardens you a little bit."
Bohm remains optimistic about his role with the Phillies and feels appreciated by those within the organization despite any offseason uncertainties.
