The Philadelphia Flyers emerged victorious against the Detroit Red Wings with a 2-1 win in overtime at Wells Fargo Center. Joel Farabee played a pivotal role, scoring in regulation and assisting Rasmus Ristolainen's game-winning goal.
The Flyers improved their record to 22-20-6 and maintained an impressive streak of five wins and one tie in their last six games. This victory also secured their season series win over Detroit, two games to one.
The first period saw minimal stoppages, with only five faceoffs following the opening faceoff. The Flyers led shots on goal 8-6. Samuel Ersson faced his first challenging shot at 7:56 from Elmer Soderblom's left-side wrister. At 12:05, Noah Cates had a scoring opportunity from about 15 feet.
Farabee scored the game's first goal at 5:21 of the second period, marking his seventh goal of the season. Assists came from Sean Couturier and Matvei Michkov. Couturier deflected the puck in the left circle, allowing Farabee to backhand it past Alex Lyon.
At 7:27, Ersson made a crucial blocker save on Alex Debrincat. Shots were then 7-2 in favor of Detroit during that part of the second period.
Cates' forechecking drew a power play for the Flyers at 14:05 after being slashed by Larkin. Despite creating traffic during the power play, they missed twice from the point.
Travis Konecny narrowly missed a goal near the end of the second period when he hit the crossbar off Morgan Frost's feed. Tyson Foerster was injured by a rising puck but later returned after receiving repairs.
Detroit equalized just 30 seconds into the third period through Ben Chiarot, assisted by Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin.
Couturier had another chance near Detroit's net at 7:40 during an effective shift for his line. Ten minutes into the third period, shots were slightly in favor of Detroit at 5-4.
Konecny hit another post off Frost's drop pass as time approached the third period's twelve-minute mark. Travis Sanheim thwarted a dangerous opportunity for Detroit soon after.
In regulation's final minute, Ersson saved Andrew Copp’s attempt, bringing third-period shots to 13-10 for Detroit (27-21 Red Wings overall).
During overtime dominated by Detroit, Farabee and Tippett orchestrated a give-and-go leading to Ristolainen’s decisive goal with assists credited to Tippett and Farabee at 4:34 OT.
Ersson achieved his fourteenth win this season with 27 saves out of 28 attempts while former Flyer Lyon stopped 24 out of 26 shots with some help from posts on Konecny’s attempts.
Rodrigo Abols made his NHL debut as fourth-line center due to Scott Laughton (personal matter) and Ryan Poehling (IR) being unavailable.
