MLB's new series "Hidden Classics" revisits notable games from the past, featuring moments that may have slipped from memory. In one such game, the Philadelphia Phillies achieved a remarkable comeback against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 21, 1990.
The game seemed all but decided when the Dodgers led 11-1 by the fifth inning. As the ninth inning began, the Phillies were still trailing 11-3 with a win probability of just 0.01%. Reflecting on this moment, Phillies legend John Kruk told The Sporting News, “We’re losing by eight runs, and all I’m thinking about at that point is getting back to the hotel by midnight, because that’s when room service closes.”
However, as Kruk recalled, “All of a sudden we start getting hits,” which shifted his focus from room service to winning. Against all odds, the Phillies managed to erase their deficit and secure victory. This feat made them the only team since 1934 to overcome a ninth-inning deficit of at least eight runs and win.
