MLB Network is set to premiere "Michael Jack Schmidt" on December 12 at 8 p.m. ET. This documentary marks the first time MLB Network has extensively covered a Philadelphia subject in its series. The program features Mike Schmidt reflecting on his career and his relationship with Philadelphia Phillies fans, coinciding with MLB Network's coverage of the MLB Winter Meetings.
The film includes insights from Baseball Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and George Brett, who comment on Schmidt’s style and achievements. Brett states, “He’s regarded as the best third baseman in Major League Baseball history. I wish I played defense like him. I wish I had power like him. Mike Schmidt was a star.”
Basketball Hall of Famers Charles Barkley, Julius Erving, and Doug Collins share their experiences as Philadelphia stars, highlighting the city's demanding sports culture. Phillies CEO John Middleton discusses Schmidt's impact on Philadelphia following his Hall of Fame induction in 1995.
The documentary also features input from legendary Phillies announcer Harry Kalas and former teammates Larry Andersen, Larry Bowa, Von Hayes, John Kruk, and Garry Maddox. Jayson Stark and Donna Schmidt provide personal insights into Schmidt's life and career challenges.
Previously, MLB Network Presents featured Greg Maddux in "One of a Kind." Since its launch in 2015, the series has profiled many baseball legends.
