Eddy Davis netted his 10th goal of the season, but two late goals from the hosts saw Philadelphia Union II’s three-game winning streak end with a 2-1 defeat at New York City FC II.
With the first team engaged in two games within three days, there were questions about who would make the trip north to play on Friday night with Union II. As it turned out, several first-team players comprised the roster. Markus Anderson started up top while Nick Pariano and Sanders Ngabo played in midfield for Marlon LeBlanc. On the back line, Jamir Bedecio and Olwethu Makhanya made up the right side of the defense with homegrown Andrew Rick returning between the posts.
The opening half was contentious between the two rivals, with six yellow cards issued by halftime. The home side had early scoring opportunities, including a shot from Jonathan Jiménez that hit the post and had to be cleared by Frankie Westfield. Moments later, Makhanya committed a tactical foul just outside the box, setting up a dangerous free-kick chance in the 11th minute. Rick positioned his wall perfectly and caught Taylor Calheira's shot.
Both teams entered with matching 7-0-1 records when gaining an initial lead and had each conceded just 19 goals this season. CJ Olney attempted to set up an opener for Union II in the 17th minute but was thwarted by NYCFC II's keeper before Eddy Davis could connect.
In the 23rd minute, Davis scored his 10th goal of the season after a strong run toward NYCFC II's keeper, putting Union II ahead. Despite falling behind, NYCFC II continued to dominate possession but struggled to break down Philadelphia’s defense.
Union II nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half but missed connections kept them from extending their lead. Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc made several substitutions throughout the match as physicality continued between both sides.
NYCFC II increased pressure late in the game and found an equalizer through Calheira with two minutes remaining. In stoppage time, Jonathan Shore scored off a quick pass from Piero Elias to secure all three points for NYCFC II.
Philadelphia Union II will return to action against Columbus Crew 2 on Sunday, July 28th at 6 pm with coverage available on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
