Alec Bohm, once the subject of offseason trade rumors, played a pivotal role in securing a victory for the Phillies during their season opener against the Nationals at Nationals Park. Bohm's two-out double in the 10th inning drove in two runs, sealing a 7-3 win for his team.

“It’s nice to be back here, back where I’m comfortable,” Bohm said, expressing his feelings about remaining with the Phillies. Despite his impressive performance, the Phillies struggled earlier in the game. The team recorded 19 strikeouts, the second-most by any MLB team on Opening Day, and lost a two-run lead in the eighth inning.

Phillies player Bryce Harper, discussing the offseason trade rumors concerning Bohm, said, “Obviously, they were real. He had a possibility of going somewhere else. A lot of guys in here, man -- including myself -- we love that kid over there. He plays the game and plays it hard and understands what it takes, man.”

Zack Wheeler, who pitched for the Phillies, also commented on the situation, saying, “I’ve been through those [trade rumors], where your name gets out there a good bit and you think you’re gone.”

Bohm, a notable player for the Phillies, has consistently contributed to the team’s success. From 2020 to 2024, he ranked third on the team in Win Probability Added, with an impressive track record in RBIs for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Bohm described his approach to hitting, stating, “Wherever you put me, I’ll try to fit in. My approach isn’t necessarily based upon where I hit. It’s a simple kind of approach… If it’s something over the plate, if it’s a strike, if it’s a good pitch to hit, I’m going to swing at it.”

Despite opening day pitching prowess from Nationals’ starter, Mackenzie Gore, who struck out 13 and allowed just one hit, and Jordan Romano’s two runs allowed in the eighth, Bohm capitalized on a fastball from Nationals left-hander Colin Poche, hitting a double at 109.3 mph.

“He’s here with us,” Wheeler emphasized about Bohm. “He’s our third baseman. He’s a really good hitter. He’s become a really good fielder, and I’m happy to have him. He’s a competitor. Yeah, I’m just glad he’s with us.”
