A third-period effort by the Philadelphia Flyers fell short in a 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. The Flyers attempted to erase a 3-0 deficit but could not equalize, resulting in a sweep of the four-game season series by Washington. This marks the Flyers' eighth regulation defeat in their last nine games.

Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring for Washington with his 35th goal of the season and 888th of his NHL career. Trever Van Riemsdyk initiated the play, with Aliaksei Protas assisting before Ovechkin scored from close range.

In the second period, Brandon Duhaime extended Washington's lead to 2-0 with a deflection goal at 1:56. A power play opportunity for Philadelphia was cut short due to a penalty on Tyson Foerster, allowing Washington to capitalize on their own power play chance later.

Washington's Andrew Mangiapane made it 3-0 after converting a broken rush into a transition goal at 11:06 of the second period. Despite some opportunities, Philadelphia managed only two shots on goal through most of this period.

The Flyers mounted pressure in the third period, aided by successful coach's challenges. Ryan Poehling scored an unassisted goal at 5:10 after Jakob Chychrun inadvertently directed the puck into his own net. Later, Sean Couturier's disallowed goal was reversed upon review, bringing Philadelphia within one goal at 17:24.

Philadelphia pulled goaltender Samuel Ersson for an extra attacker following Couturier's goal but failed to find an equalizer. Ersson made 13 saves on 16 shots while Washington goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped 27 of 29 shots faced.

Postgame reflections highlighted key moments such as Mangiapane's decisive goal and special teams' performance where Philadelphia went scoreless on two power plays and successfully killed one penalty. Additionally, Alex Ovechkin moved closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record with his tally during this game.
