Hours before the Philadelphia Phillies faced the Tampa Bay Rays in their final Grapefruit League game at BayCare Ballpark, Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations, addressed reporters and broadcasters. He provided updates on Ranger Suárez's injury, roster decisions, and recent acquisitions.
Suárez will start the season on the 15-day injured list due to lower back soreness. Although eligible for activation by April 8, his return will take longer. "I don’t think it will be long, long," Dombrowski stated. "If things continue to progress the way they are now, he would pitch sometime in April." Taijuan Walker is set to replace Suárez in the rotation with his first start against the Rockies on April 3.
Kody Clemens secured a spot on the team over Buddy Kennedy. The Phillies informed Clemens of this decision while attempting to trade Kennedy, who lacks Minor League options. If not traded by Thursday noon when rosters are finalized, Kennedy will be designated for assignment. "We’ve always liked Kody Clemens," Dombrowski noted.
The Phillies also added Carlos Hernández to their bullpen after claiming him off waivers from Kansas City. Despite past struggles with control, they see potential in his powerful arm. "We’ve tried to get Carlos Hernández for a couple years," said Dombrowski.
Regarding lineup strategy for Opening Day and beyond, Trea Turner might lead off initially while Kyle Schwarber could follow depending on opposing pitchers' handedness. Dombrowski emphasized that manager Rob Thomson has autonomy over lineup decisions: "You’d be surprised how insignificant it is."
