Garrett Stubbs, the Philadelphia Phillies' backup catcher, has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. This decision comes as Rafael Marchán secured his position with the team due to his performance and lack of remaining options. Stubbs, who had one option left, was aware of his challenging situation from the start of Spring Training.
“It’s not the first time I’ve been sent down,” Stubbs said. Despite playing well during spring training, he acknowledged that Marchán's strong play influenced the team's decision. Manager Rob Thomson and top executives Dave Dombrowski and Preston Mattingly were involved in delivering the news to Stubbs.
“There’s not [a good way to break that news],” Thomson remarked after a game against the Braves. He emphasized Stubbs' importance to the team despite this move.
Stubbs has been an integral part of the team over recent seasons, both on and off the field. His positive attitude and connection with fans have made him a popular figure in Philadelphia.
Marchán will now serve as J.T. Realmuto's backup, especially as plans are in place for Realmuto to catch fewer games this season. Dombrowski highlighted Marchán's potential: “We’ve liked him for a long time.”
While disappointed, Stubbs remains optimistic about returning to the major leagues later this year: “I hope he goes up there and wins baseball games for the Phils because that’s what I want to see.”
For now, Stubbs will focus on contributing at Triple-A while preparing IronPigs pitchers for potential roles with the Phillies.
