The Philadelphia Eagles have announced a one-year contract agreement with fullback Ben VanSumeren. The player, now in his third year, initially joined the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He spent time on the practice squad before being added to the active roster later that year.
VanSumeren has made significant contributions to the team's special teams unit, ranking third with 213 special teams snaps. Additionally, he played 22 offensive snaps this season until being placed on Injured Reserve in November 2024.
Reflecting on his development, VanSumeren stated in August: "I've definitely taken some big strides in that way, along with some coaching points I've gotten from coaches in the building and players I've played with, and it's really helped me come a long way."
Before entering the NFL, VanSumeren had notable achievements at Michigan and Michigan State. His college career included 100 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, two passes defended at linebacker, and a touchdown on nine carries as a fullback.
Head Coach Nick Sirianni commented on VanSumeren's performance: "Speed, athletic ability, physicality, want to... he shows us that on a daily basis." The coach's belief is echoed by VanSumeren: "I'm grateful that I'm in a place that believes in me."
VanSumeren will continue to play under Head Coach Sirianni alongside Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio and new Offensive Coordinator Kevin Patullo. Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay will also utilize his skills throughout the upcoming season.
