Matt Strahm, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, may not be ready to play by Opening Day due to a shoulder injury. An MRI revealed an impingement in his left shoulder, causing inflammation and irritation but no structural damage. Strahm will refrain from throwing until Thursday when he will be examined by a team physician.

Strahm acknowledged the potential need to start the season on the injured list. “It’s only March,” he remarked at BayCare Ballpark. “We have bigger plans for this team than March.” Despite his desire to contribute, he recognizes the importance of addressing his injury properly.

The pitcher's contract includes a $4.5 million club option for 2026, which increases based on innings pitched this season. If he reaches 60 innings, it automatically vests at $7.5 million. “Selfishly, I want to throw 60 innings,” Strahm admitted, though he emphasized prioritizing the team's success over personal goals.

Strahm is taking oral anti-inflammatories but has not received any injections for his condition. He described how the inflammation affects his shoulder's movement and causes discomfort during intense activity.

Last season, Strahm was an essential part of the Phillies' bullpen with a 1.87 ERA over 66 appearances and made his first All-Star team. The current situation could open opportunities for other pitchers like Devin Sweet or reinforce Taijuan Walker's role in relief.

In spring training games, Strahm struggled with decreased velocity and effectiveness compared to last year. His fastball averaged lower speeds than previously recorded.

“This is something I don’t want to be dumb with,” said Strahm about managing his health wisely as he aims to extend his career into future seasons.
