Running back Saquon Barkley spoke to the media for the first time since signing a two-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley returned to the NovaCare Complex, expressing his gratitude for being recognized by the organization following a standout season.
"I think it was just mutual, the love I have for the organization. I want to be here for a very long time and the same thing that they feel for me, obviously it shows," Barkley stated.
Barkley's extension comes after he earned accolades as the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year in his first season with Philadelphia. Originally joining on March 13, 2024, with a three-year deal, Barkley set records by breaking the Eagles' single-season rushing record with 2,005 yards and setting an NFL record for most rushing yards including playoffs at 2,504 yards. He also contributed 15 total touchdowns during that season.
The Eagles rewarded him following their successful Super Bowl run. "You never know, especially in this business," Barkley remarked about his surprise regarding the extension. "Like I said, the extension is obviously great and the money thing is great too."
Barkley expressed appreciation for playing alongside talents like A.J. Brown, Jalen Hurts, and DeVonta Smith behind a top offensive line unit. He emphasized winning as his main priority and saw joining Philadelphia as beneficial to his legacy.
"100 percent," Barkley confirmed when asked if staying in Philadelphia would help cement his legacy. He acknowledged that success requires teamwork and praised how the organization continues to bring in quality players.
Despite acknowledging that future seasons might differ from 2024's success, Barkley remained committed to adapting and contributing to team victories in any way possible.
"I'm not quite sure (how teams will defend against him next year), but you have to adapt," he noted about future challenges. His focus remains on helping his team win through various roles such as running, catching or blocking – emphasizing adaptability each year.
