Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, PhiladelphiaEagles.com is interviewing assistant coaches to discuss key moments and players contributing to the team's success. Clint Hurtt, Senior Defensive Assistant and Defensive Line Coach, highlighted Jalen Carter's abilities and praised other linemen for capitalizing on opportunities created by Carter's presence.
When asked about Jalen Carter's skills, Hurtt said, "He has the ability to two-gap. He can play one gap single and penetrate and get vertical up the field. A lot of D-linemen can't do that or they don't understand how to. Very high football IQ to understand line calls, protections, identifications in the run game, knows when to take shots and when not. He can play multiple techniques. Those are the things that he does really, really well."
Hurtt also acknowledged the contributions of other defensive linemen: "Milton Williams, Jordan Davis, all of the guys outside of Jalen, they all should be recognized even more because it's one thing to have a great player who can command a lot of attention like Jalen, but are those guys performing at a high enough level to take advantage of the opportunities that have been provided and the answer to that is a resounding yes."
Reflecting on teamwork dynamics under Head Coach Nick Sirianni's philosophy, Hurtt mentioned: "We know it's about being connected as a team. One thing that Coach (Nick) Sirianni says all of the time that I think is very profound, 'I can't be great without the greatness of others.' It takes a team to get stuff done."
Discussing facing Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, Hurtt remarked on the challenge: "Great challenge. Great challenge. All-time great player. We know the challenge in front of us. That's all you ever ask for as an athlete – the biggest stage, the biggest moments against the very best players."
