Ahead of Super Bowl LIX, PhiladelphiaEagles.com is conducting interviews with assistant coaches to discuss the team's journey to the championship game. Jeff Stoutland, Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach, shared his insights on lessons learned from their previous Super Bowl meeting with the Chiefs and how players have adapted to expanded roles this season.
Reflecting on the last Super Bowl encounter with the Chiefs, Stoutland remarked, "I just think there's plays in that game that you wish you could have back. I think that when you go and experience that type of thing that's the only way we learn." He emphasized the importance of learning through experiences and stated, "This is a business trip. This seems great, but I'm just telling you, we are here on a business trip."
Jordan Mailata's role as a first-time captain was also discussed. Stoutland noted Mailata's seamless transition into leadership following Jason Kelce's retirement: "When Jason Kelce retired, there were these couple guys that stepped into that batter's box immediately. He was one of them." He highlighted Mailata's consistency and respect earned through performance and preparation.
Cam Jurgens' ability to step in for Kelce and earn Pro Bowl honors was attributed to his experience playing next to Kelce at right guard. Stoutland explained, "Do you have any clue or any idea how valuable that was to hear him, Kelce right there next to you?" He stressed the importance of understanding expectations and maximizing every opportunity in meetings and drills.
