The National Hockey League, in collaboration with the Philadelphia Flyers, has announced the selection of 12 players for the First and Second Quarter-Century Teams representing the Philadelphia Flyers from 2000 to 2025. Each team consists of three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender. The selections were made by a panel comprising media members, retired players, and club executives.
The announcement is part of a broader initiative that began at the NHL Winter Classic on January 1st. Throughout January, the NHL will reveal each club's First and Second Quarter-Century Teams. Following these announcements, fans and players named to these teams will vote on the top 25 NHL players from the past quarter-century.
The First Team features forwards Simon Gagne, Claude Giroux, and Mike Richards; defensemen Eric Desjardins and Kimmo Timonen; and goaltender Roman Cechmanek. These six athletes have collectively played 3,575 games for the Flyers, accumulating a total of 2,451 points and scoring 819 goals. They have appeared in a combined total of 18 NHL All-Star Games.
Simon Gagne was drafted by the Flyers in 1998 as their first-round pick. Over his career with Philadelphia spanning eleven seasons, he recorded significant achievements including back-to-back 40-goal seasons in mid-2000s.
Claude Giroux ranks second in franchise history with 900 points during his tenure with Philadelphia which lasted until his departure in 2022. He served as captain from 2013 onward.
Mike Richards contributed significantly during his six-season stint with Philadelphia before being traded in 2011. Known for his defensive skills as well as offensive contributions especially during playoffs where he helped lead them to finals appearances.
Eric Desjardins holds records among defensemen within Flyer’s history while Kimmo Timonen was an alternate captain who consistently performed at high levels throughout seven seasons contributing heavily during playoff runs like those seen back around year ten years ago when they reached finals once again thanks largely due efforts such players themselves alongside teammates such goalie Roman Cechmanek whose performances included notable accolades such Vezina Trophy runner-up finish amongst others over course time spent playing between pipes representing this storied franchise based out city brotherly love itself!
