The Philadelphia Eagles have activated wide receiver and punt returner Britain Covey from Injured Reserve. Covey had been sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained in the team's Week 3 victory over New Orleans. His activation comes as the Eagles prepare for their Sunday night game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Covey's return fills an open roster spot created when defensive end Bryce Huff was placed on Injured Reserve following a wrist procedure. Covey, who practiced fully throughout the week, no longer carries a questionable status for the upcoming game.
"I'm just happy to be back," Covey expressed earlier this week. "I've worked hard and progressed nicely. It feels good to open the practice window, being out there, competing."
Head Coach Nick Sirianni praised Covey's efforts: "He's done a nice job," Sirianni said on Friday. "We'll see where he is by the end of the day. We don't have to make any decisions quite yet, but he's done a nice job. Nice to get him back out there."
Before his injury, Covey was expanding his role on offense with career-high statistics in receptions and offensive snaps within three games played this season. However, his primary contribution has been as a punt returner; last year he led the league with 417 punt return yards.
In Covey's absence, Cooper DeJean took over punt return duties and averaged nearly 12 yards per return, ranking second in the NFC.
"They are both very fearless as punt returners," Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay noted earlier this week about DeJean and Covey's complementary skills.
Additionally, tight end C.J. Uzomah has been elevated from the practice squad for a second consecutive week after making his debut during last week's win over Washington.
