The Philadelphia Eagles have made significant strides in the 2024 NFL season, largely due to strategic moves in free agency. Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman discussed the team's aggressive approach at the NFL Annual Meeting in March, capitalizing on a substantial increase in the salary cap to $255.4 million.
The Eagles' roster has undergone a transformation, resulting in an impressive 8-2 record and a six-game winning streak. Key acquisitions have played pivotal roles, as highlighted by Roseman and other team officials.
Running back Saquon Barkley was signed as an unrestricted free agent. "We think Saquon is a special player," said Roseman. Barkley has proven his worth with over 1,000 yards, leading the NFL in both yards from scrimmage and rushing.
Linebacker Zack Baun joined the team with high expectations from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. "We think Zack is a versatile player," noted Roseman. Baun has excelled since day one, becoming a key playmaker.
Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was also added to bolster the defense. "Playmaker, ball skills, instincts," described Roseman of Gardner-Johnson's attributes. His presence has been felt on one of the league's top defenses.
Offensive guard Mekhi Becton earned his starting position through training camp performance. Head Coach Nick Sirianni stated, "We are open to seeing what he can do." Becton's addition has strengthened the offensive line significantly.
Defensive end Bryce Huff was brought into the edge rotation with praise from Roseman for his leverage and explosiveness. Huff's productivity continues to rise as part of an improving defense.
Linebacker Oren Burks was recognized for his character and special teams leadership by Roseman: "Tremendous character as well." Burks remains a crucial backup and special teams contributor.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett was acquired via trade to add depth at quarterback. "Kenny is a talented guy," remarked Roseman about Pickett's potential contribution.
Veteran defensive end Brandon Graham was retained before hitting free agency, continuing to make impactful plays on defense in his 15th season. "BG gets to play in his 15th season," commented Roseman on Graham's ongoing value.
Punter Braden Mann stayed with the team before entering free agency, praised by Roseman for his athleticism and role as a holder: "He's improving, working hard."
Cornerback Avonte Maddox returned after testing free agency and now contributes across various defensive packages while also playing on special teams. "Glad to have him back," said Roseman regarding Maddox's versatility.
The Eagles' strategic signings and retention efforts have paid off significantly this season, positioning them strongly within their division and conference.
