Cam Jurgens is preparing for a significant transition as he steps into the role of starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles. This change follows the retirement of Jason Kelce, who held the position for 13 years. During a recent press conference, Jurgens expressed his feelings about taking over Kelce's locker at the NovaCare Complex. "It does feel a little weird without Kelce here," he admitted.
Jurgens has been groomed for this role since being selected by Philadelphia in the 2022 NFL Draft with the 51st overall pick. He was identified as a promising prospect by Kelce himself during the pre-draft process. Over two seasons, Jurgens learned from Kelce by backing him up and playing alongside him as a guard.
Reflecting on his experience learning from Kelce, Jurgens stated, "I learned so much playing behind him my first year." He emphasized that his goal is not to replicate Kelce but to be himself: "I'm not trying to be somebody's replacement; I am just trying to be myself."
Jurgens credits his mindset to spending time with Kelce and observing his professionalism both on and off the field. As he adjusts to leading without Kelce, Jurgens is mentoring second-year guard Tyler Steen, who now occupies Jurgens' former locker.
Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland has fostered an inclusive culture among offensive linemen, encouraging leadership across all players. "We have a really good O-line room," said Jurgens, appreciating the supportive environment cultivated by Stoutland and previously elevated by Kelce.
As the new season approaches, Jurgens remains enthusiastic about his role with the team. "There's a sense of excitement that I'm here playing football with these guys," he said.
