Saint Joseph's University emerged victorious in a midweek baseball matchup against the University of Pennsylvania, winning 8-3 at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium. Both teams now hold identical records of 14-18. The Quakers have been struggling recently, having lost three consecutive games and five out of their last six.
Key performances for Penn included Connor Chavez, who extended his reached-base streak to 26 games despite going hitless and ending his hitting streak at 11 games. Wyatt Henseler contributed with two hits and an RBI, bringing his career total to 203 hits, nearing Dan Williams' record for career hits at Penn.
Noah Millikan started on the mound for Penn but was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in the first inning. He struck out two batters over 2.2 innings before being relieved by John Cerwinski, who pitched 2.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts.
The game began with Saint Joseph's taking an early lead through an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Although Millikan managed a clean second inning, Penn struggled offensively until Gavin Collins earned a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to score their first run.
Saint Joseph's extended their lead significantly in the sixth inning with three runs on five hits and continued to build on it in subsequent innings. Despite late efforts from Penn, including a two-run homer by Carson Ozmer and an RBI single from Henseler in the ninth inning, they were unable to close the gap.
Looking ahead, Penn will face Princeton this weekend in a series crucial for Ivy League standings as both teams are tied with Yale for third place.
