Right-handed pitcher Eli Trop has been selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. This marks Trop as the second player from the University of Pennsylvania's baseball team to be drafted this week. Earlier, Jackson Appel, a catcher, was chosen by the Chicago White Sox in the sixth round.
Trop, who hails from Seattle, Washington, had a notable three-season tenure with Penn's Quakers. He played a crucial role in leading their bullpen over the past two years, contributing to back-to-back Ivy League Tournament victories and appearances in NCAA regionals during both seasons. In 2024 alone, Trop made 21 bullpen appearances, achieving a record of 3-2 with an ERA of 3.33. He struck out 32 batters while issuing only 15 walks.
The previous year saw Trop maintain an unbeaten record of 4-0 and an ERA of 2.37 across 17 outings, amassing 36 strikeouts against just 12 walks. Before this season began, he earned recognition on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List alongside teammate Carson Ozmer.
From his start in college baseball through to now (2022-24), Trop accumulated a record of 7-2 with a career ERA of 3.07 over his total appearances spanning nearly three seasons—striking out a total of 82 batters and walking just 33 across roughly fifty-five innings pitched—holding opponents to an average batting figure standing at .179.
Pennsylvania University's history with players reaching MLB is highlighted by several recent draftees including Joe Miller picked by Detroit Tigers in '22 and Josh Hood taken by Boston Red Sox back in '19 among others—a legacy continuing robustly with these latest selections into major league teams like Philadelphia Phillies for Eli Trop.
