The University of Pennsylvania baseball team began their final regular-season series with a defeat, losing to Dartmouth 12-3 at Tommy Lasorda Field in Philadelphia on Friday. This outcome leaves the Quakers with an overall record of 18-22 and an Ivy League record of 9-10. Dartmouth improved to 12-24 overall and 7-12 in the conference.
Dartmouth capitalized on two innings where they scored five runs each, securing a comfortable nine-run victory. The Big Green took the lead in the second inning after Penn's Cole Zaffiro allowed a solo home run. Despite a promising start for Penn, with Ryan Taylor doubling and Nick Spaventa hitting a two-run homer, Dartmouth quickly regained control by scoring five runs in the third inning.
Zaffiro was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs over five innings, striking out six batters while allowing nine hits and two walks. Marty Coyne provided solid relief pitching for Penn, preventing any hits during his time on the mound.
Penn managed three runs through homers from Davis Baker and Nick Spaventa but left several runners stranded throughout the game. In contrast, Dartmouth effectively capitalized on their opportunities, including scoring five additional runs in the sixth inning against John Cerwinski.
Looking ahead, Penn will conclude its regular season with a doubleheader against Dartmouth starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Before Game 1 begins, there will be a pre-game ceremony to honor nine senior players from the Quakers team.
