The Philadelphia Phillies concluded their 2024 season with a disappointing exit from the National League Division Series (NLDS) against the New York Mets. The series ended in Game 4, with the Mets securing a 4-1 victory. Despite high expectations following a strong start to the season, the Phillies were unable to advance past this stage.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, left-hander Matt Strahm stated, “If we could have gotten back to [Citizens Bank Park] for [Game] 5, I think it would’ve been something special. I mean, it's just bitter missing out on that opportunity.”

The sixth inning of Game 4 highlighted the team's struggles during the series. Bryce Harper hit a leadoff double but was left stranded as Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto struck out, and Bryson Stott grounded out. The Phillies managed only 12 runs throughout the series and batted .186 with a .597 OPS.

The bullpen, which had been reliable for much of the season, faltered in the NLDS with an ERA of 11.37—the fifth-highest in postseason history for any bullpen over at least ten innings.

Looking ahead, changes are anticipated within the team’s roster and strategy. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski commented on Andrew Painter's potential impact: “I do think he’ll be pitching at the big league level at some point in 2025.” Painter is currently pitching in the Arizona Fall League and is considered a top prospect.

Offensive improvements are necessary despite decent overall numbers during the regular season where they ranked fourth in OPS (.750) and fifth in runs (784). However, prolonged slumps affected their performance significantly.

J.T. Realmuto acknowledged these challenges: “It’s just a hard game... We knew we weren’t playing our best baseball coming into the postseason.”

Cristopher Sánchez showed promise by earning NL Pitcher of the Month honors in June and signing a four-year contract extension. Zack Wheeler was recognized as Team MVP after finishing with a team-high WAR of 6.1.

As they prepare for next year, adjustments will be crucial for Philadelphia to meet its championship aspirations once again.
