The stress is palpable for NFL players, regardless of their experience level, as the final preseason game approaches and the league-mandated roster cut to 53 players looms on Tuesday, August 27 at 4 PM.
"You have to be aware of what is happening and at the same time you have to focus on your job every part of the day," wide receiver Parris Campbell said after a recent practice at the NovaCare Complex. "With everything I've been through in my career, the one thing I would say is that it is never perfect. You're always going to have stressors whether you are injured or healthy or whatever the case may be."
Campbell emphasized the importance of managing stress. "The key is to manage it. I've learned that with everything I've been through in my career."
Now in his sixth NFL season, Campbell's career has been plagued by injuries, yet he remains optimistic and focused. "Just go out and play your best football each and every day, and the rest will take care of itself," he added.
Campbell's story mirrors that of many players vying for a spot on their team's roster. After signing with the Eagles in free agency following a season with the New York Giants, Campbell aims to make an impact. He began his career with the Colts as a second-round draft pick in 2019 and played five seasons in Indianapolis, including two under current Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni when he was offensive coordinator there.
In his only fully healthy season (2022), Campbell recorded 63 receptions for 623 yards and three touchdowns with the Colts. His goal remains clear: stay healthy and perform well.
"I'm as faith-based as it comes and that's the thing that I stand on," Campbell said. "That's the rock of who I am, my family, and that's our foundation whether things are going good or going bad."
Despite missing time during Training Camp due to a groin injury, Campbell feels positive about his performance upon returning to practice. He looks forward to playing against Minnesota in Saturday’s preseason finale.
"I'm pleased with what I've done here when I've been on the field," he stated. "I've knocked off the rust and I'm feeling good out there."
Reflecting on his journey back from injury, Campbell noted some frustrations but remained determined. "You have to learn from your mistakes and then go out and get better," he said.
For Campbell and many others in similar positions across NFL teams, this final preseason game represents more than just another match; it's an opportunity to secure their place on a team.
"We are fighting for our jobs," Campbell concluded. "That's the meaning of the NFL and these games... We're all getting our fair chance and we are all valued."
