Philadelphia Union is set to face Columbus Crew in the Leagues Cup Semifinal on Wednesday, August 21. This marks the second consecutive year that Philadelphia Union has reached this stage of the tournament.
The Union advanced to the semifinals after defeating Mazatlán FC in a penalty shootout on Saturday night, extending their unbeaten streak to seven matches since July 17 against New England Revolution. Their journey in the Leagues Cup began over a month ago with a victory over Charlotte FC and a draw against Cruz Azul. Forward Tai Baribo played a crucial role by scoring braces in consecutive knockout round matches against CF Montreal and FC Cincinnati, securing their first-ever road win in the tournament.
Columbus Crew, having secured a bye into the Knockout Rounds due to their MLS Cup victory, have played three games so far in the 2024 Leagues Cup. They started with a 4-0 win over Sporting Kansas City and then defeated Inter Miami CF 3-2. On Saturday night, they clinched their semifinal spot by winning another penalty shootout against New York City FC.
