The Union advanced to this stage after defeating CF Montreal in challenging weather conditions at Subaru Park on Friday night. The team finished first in East Group 4, securing victories against Charlotte FC with a score of 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with Cruz Azul.
FC Cincinnati holds the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament and remains unbeaten. They secured a penalty shootout win over Liga MX side Santos Laguna in the Round of 32 on Friday night. In group play, they triumphed over Queretaro and New York City FC.
This upcoming match marks the second encounter between these Eastern Conference rivals in 2024. Their previous meeting in June resulted in a high-scoring affair, ending with a 4-3 victory for FC Cincinnati. Tai Baribo scored his first two goals for Philadelphia Union during that game, but Luciano Acosta's late goal ensured Cincinnati's win and ended Philadelphia’s unbeaten road streak.
