The Philadelphia Eagles' winning streak ended at 10 games after a close 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The game, held at Northwest Stadium, was marked by high intensity and significant momentum shifts.
In the final moments of the game, a Reed Blankenship interception provided the Eagles with an opportunity to secure victory. However, a crucial third-down pass from backup quarterback Kenny Pickett to DeVonta Smith fell incomplete. As a result, the Eagles settled for a field goal by Jake Elliott, leading 33-28 before Washington's decisive drive led by quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Pickett acknowledged Smith's importance to the team: "We wouldn't be in the position in that game without (Smith), to begin with. He's an unbelievable player."
The Eagles faced defensive challenges following safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson's ejection due to unsportsmanlike penalties. Washington capitalized by scoring touchdowns on three out of four possessions afterward.
"This is one game. Everything's still in front of us," said cornerback Darius Slay, emphasizing that despite the loss, their goals remain attainable.
Early in the game, the Eagles' defense made impactful plays including stopping Washington on fourth down and recovering a fumble forced by Jalen Carter.
Jalen Hurts exited early due to injury after being hit by Frankie Luvu, prompting Pickett to step in as quarterback. Despite initial success including a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown, Pickett and the offense struggled under pressure later in the game.
"I'm focused on the outcome...just frustrated," expressed Pickett about missing out on securing a win for his team.
The first quarter showcased strong performances from Saquon Barkley who achieved two touchdowns including an impressive 68-yard run.
"Everything moves through them," Barkley praised his teammates' blocking efforts during his notable touchdown run.
The Eagles now aim to clinch their division title next week against Dallas at Lincoln Financial Field.
