No. 1 prospect Andrew Painter is preparing to return to competitive baseball with Single-A Clearwater, as confirmed by Phillies manager Rob Thomson before the team's Sunday match against the Dodgers. Painter, who last pitched in an affiliated game on September 16, 2022, will take the field on Friday following his recovery from an extended rehabilitation process.
Painter, ranked as the No. 7 prospect by MLB Pipeline, suffered a right elbow injury in March 2023 which led to Tommy John surgery in July of the same year. After more than a year of recovery, including participating in the Arizona Fall League last fall, Painter now aims for a midsummer major league debut.
Though Painter did not pitch during the Grapefruit League games this past spring, he participated in the big-league camp. This move allowed the Phillies' athletic staff to closely observe him. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski indicated Painter could join the team's rotation by "July-ish." During spring, Painter was surrounded by potential future teammates such as ace Zack Wheeler and Matt Strahm.
For now, Painter is expected to pitch just once a week, typical for players at his current level. His upcoming start is likely to be limited to two, perhaps three innings, ensuring a cautious approach to his return.
"The Phillies will not rush him back," emphasizing the club’s intention to proceed carefully with Painter’s progression.
