Ahead of a significant match against Orlando City SC, Philadelphia Union's Head Coach Bradley Carnell has shared his insights with digital club reporter Sage Hurley. In an interview titled "Coffee With Coach," Carnell discussed the upcoming game set to take place at Subaru Park, highlighting Orlando City's recent form and the Union's preparation for the encounter.
"They're very creative, very dangerous in the final third," said Carnell, reflecting on Orlando City's recent performances. He mentioned players like Pasalic and Angullo as notable threats that require attention. The first game of the season against Orlando gave the Union a confidence boost, as they rallied and dominated in a convincing win.
Speaking about the team's recent form, Carnell commented on the match against Miami, where they were disappointed with the outcome despite dominating in terms of shots and attacks. However, he emphasized the resilience and fighting spirit of the team, noting, "I'm proud of the effort from the group... what I want to see is a signature of resilience, determination. Never say die."
Carnell also highlighted the club's adaptability by using a "plug and play" method with different lineups and substitutions, such as introducing Indy Vassilev against Miami to gain control in midfield. Carnell noted, "It just takes a bit of bravery to do it as staff," emphasizing the empowerment and adaptability required of the players.
Reflecting on recent news, Carnell praised Tai Baribo, who was named Major League Soccer Player of the Month, attributing Baribo's success to the collective team effort. Carnell remarked, "I kind of look at it the other way. I don't look at the individual. I look at what the team has done to provide him with those opportunities."
Notably, Carnell emphasized Baribo's defensive contributions, stating, "Our strikers are our first defenders, so they are the ones that initiate the press."
The Union will look to build on their momentum and resilience as they face Orlando City in their forthcoming match at Subaru Park.
